Caring For Your Furniture

Caring For Your Furniture

Thank you for choosing to shop at Our Furniture Warehouse, we know that you care about your new furniture so we have created the below care instructions to help you maintain the appearance and longevity of your purchase, thank you for shopping with us.

Leather Characteristics

Your leather lounge suite has been manufactured from genuine leather hide, leather owes its inherent beauty to variations in grain, texture, colour tones and its natural characteristics which contribute to the personality and uniqueness of each upholstered leather product. Because leather is a natural product, this limited warranty does not cover natural characteristics of leather, such as markings caused by – insect bites, barbed wire, veining, abrasions, injuries to the animal, wrinkling or variations in grain or colour tones on different sections of the same leather product. In time leather will develop comfort creases whilst filling materials will soften and to some extent flatten out.

Caring For Your Leather

To maintain the beautiful soft feel of your new leather lounge, we recommend not to use detergents, solvents, abrasives, use only recommended leather cleaners or suede cleaners only.

Oily stains are the biggest danger to leather surfaces. In the event of stains from oils, fats, makeup, chocolate or beverages, remove any excess liquid by dabbing with an absorbent paper towel. Gently wipe the stain from the outside edges towards the centre with a clean cloth dampened with water and neutral soap. Dry the stain, gently wiping with a dry cloth. When cleaning oily stains do not use heavy pressure, as this can cause the substance to enter the pores of the leather.

Do not dry-clean or machine wash. Protect from direct heat and sunlight sources, both direct and through heating vents. Vacuum regularly (weekly) with the soft brush of the vacuum cleaner, to remove dust and grit; then wipe with a soft colourfast cloth dampened with plain water. This should be done as often as necessary (weekly). Every three or four months a systematic cleaning with leather cleaning agents is recommended available at all Our Furniture Warehouse store. These products have special additives to nourish your leather and add to its moisture repellents.

Special note: The salts and body oils that occur naturally in human skin can damage the surface of the leather if left uncleaned for lengthy periods. In warm or humid weather it is important that leather be wiped over as often as weekly, particularly if the leather has become damp with perspiration or deposits of body oils are visible on areas such as headrests. Always clean along any creases that have developed in the leather and pay particular attention to areas that come in contact with the skin, such as headrests, arm rests or seat cushions. In time leather will develop comfort creases whilst filling materials will soften and to some extent flatten out. Careless use of cigarettes or matches could
set fire to furniture.

The accumulation of body-hair, oil, dirt and grime will accelerate wear causing both discoloration and surface damage. Weekly removal following care instructions as listed above is important for furniture under domestic (non-commercial) use.

Caring For Your Fabric

Vacuum regularly using low suction. Rotate reversible cushions regularly. Protect from direct sunlight. When cleaning do not remove cushion covers for separate cleaning or washing, even though they may have zippers. Clean with hot water extraction machine (hot). Do not wet filling. Dry in shade away from direct heat. Allow to dry thoroughly before re-use. Alternatively, clean using on site dry-cleaning machine. Professional cleaning recommended. Use only water base upholstery detergent. Do not wet filling. Allow to dry before re-use. Re-application of protective treatment maybe necessary.

In time most fabrics will develop comfort creases whilst filling materials will soften and to some extent flatten out. Spot Cleaning: Treat spills and stains as soon as possible, before they set in. Gently scrape any soil or mop any liquid from the surface of the fabric. Apply only water based proprietary cleaning agents strictly according to their instructions to remove the residue of the spill. Do not saturate the fabric or interior with water or other cleaning liquids.

Stitching/Seams No sharp objects to be on or near furniture as these can catch and cause stitching to come undone. Buckles and shoes can also cause stitching to break if caught. Its important to warn children about jumping on your new sofa as this can also cause long term damage to stitching areas if caught by accident. Never pull on arms to get out of lounge suites as this will cause seams to split. Cut threads off – do not pull as this will lead to damage.[/toggle]

Colour Fastness No fabric, even those tested to industry requirements, is 100 percent colourfast and it is impossible to prevent fading if the right precautions are not taken. Winter sun sitting low in the sky can have the biggest impact, particularly when curtains are pulled back. However, any room with a lot of daylight can cause susceptible fabrics to fade.[/toggle]

Fading & Sun Damage Dyed fabrics, particularly those dyed in bright colours, are susceptible to fading. North facing rooms are exposed to the most sunlight. Constant exposure to the direct rays of the sun can break down the fabric fibres, causing them to become brittle and increasing the risk of a rip or tear during cleaning.[/toggle]

Discolouration Tobacco smoke will cause a yellow or brown stain on most fabrics and is a particular problem on light coloured materials. (Careless use of cigarettes or matches could also set fire to Furniture)[/toggle]

Oxidation Fumes from fires of all kinds, car exhausts and kitchen stoves produce a sulphur compound which, when combined with humidity and oxygen, produces a mild sulphuric acid. This can cling to the fabric and contribute to deterioration and discolouration. Regular professional cleaning can help minimise the impact of this.[/toggle]

Pilling This is often a result of wear and tear, but climatic conditions and air quality can also contribute. Fibres in some clothing can transfer pills to the furniture. Pilling is not a defect and can easily be removed using a battery operated pilling appliance available from most haberdashery stores.[/toggle]

Spills & Stains Attend to stains and spills as quickly as possible after the incident. Mop up any spilled liquid and scrape away any dirt, then clean as recommended for the type of stain. Always address the stain immediately, do not let set in, follow the care instructions given on the label sewn into the lounge. If the label has been removed or come off for some reason, you can refer to the steps below. Be careful about oversaturating fabrics, especially with detergent, as this can create watermarking or further staining. There’s also a big difference in the approach for oil and non-oil based stains. Please find following the recommended approach to various stains. [/toggle]

Oil Based Use warm water mixed with household soap (test first on a hidden part of the fabric). Rub gently and blot dry with a clean towel. Then use clean, cold water (rain or distilled water is best) and go through the blot drying process again. . Clean entire panels of fabric rather than specific spots as this will prevent the stain from standing out when the cleaning is done.[/toggle]

Non-Oil Apply the same method as for oil stains a cleaner suitable to remove these stains may be used, but we would recommend a soap and water solution firstly. If using a cleaning product, test firstly on a hidden part of the fabric and check care labels for specific instructions before full application to stain.[/toggle]

Alcohol Mop up excess liquid, dab at the stain with a rubbing alcohol on a clean cloth, then blot repeatedly with a solution of cool water and detergent. Repeat and blot dry with a clean towel.[/toggle]

Blood Ammonia is the best solution for blood. Mix a solution with one teaspoon of ammonia in a cup of cold water and dab at the spot. Do not over rub. Blot with a clean towel and repeat the process. Once the spot is gone, continue to dab the stained area with water and blot. Repeat after fifteen minutes, this time with white distilled vinegar. Blot once again, using a dry towel. [/toggle]

Chewing Gum Rub an ice cube over the gum to harden it, then scrape it up with a blunt knife. This should remove most of the gum. The remainder should clean up with dry cleaning fluid.[/toggle]

Coffee & Tea Sponge the stain with warm water then apply warm glycerine. Leave it for thirty minutes and wash with warm water, drying quickly.[/toggle]

Cosmetics Sponge with warm water then apply warm glycerine. Wait thirty minutes then wash with water, drying quickly.[/toggle]

Caring For Your PVC Coated (Vinyl) & Poly Eurothane Fabrics

General care and maintenance weekly: Wipe the surface of your upholstery fabric with a soft colourfast cloth dipped in chemically neutral or warm pure soap/water solution. Wipe surface using dry colourfast cloth before the surface has dried. Particular attention should be made to headrests, armrests & seat cushions to remove body oils which can cause hardening of the fabric surface. Fabric hardening/cracking is not recognised as a manufacturing fault, this is caused by not maintaining fabric as directed.
For treating specific stains, wipe quickly and from “outside in”. Always remember that prompt attention yields more complete removal. Stubborn grime may require gentle scrubbing with a soft colourfast cloth. In time vinyl will develop comfort creases whilst filling materials will soften and to some extent flatten out. Careless use of cigarettes or matches could set fire to Furniture

Warning: Do not remove any part for separate cleaning. Do not machine wash. Do not dryclean. Never use furniture polishes, abrasive cleaners, brushes or steel wool.

Regular use of cleaners containing hydrocarbons or similar additives may cause damage to the fabric and harden surface. Strong solvents, eg acetone, are detrimental to the fabrics surface. Avoid exposure to excessive heat, non
colourfast dyestuffs found in some articles of clothing may transfer dye to the fabrics surface.

Dye transfer to surface of the fabric is not recognised as a manufacturing fault. The accumulation of body hair, oil, dirt and grime will accelerate wear causing both discolouration and surface damage. Weekly removal following care instructions listed is important for furniture under domestic (non-commercial) use.

Our Furniture Warehouse only use quality reclining mechanisms which are designed and engineered for easy operation, you can recline in comfort whilst moving smoothly to your ultimate comfort position. It is very important that the below instructions are followed for correct use of the mechanism. losing the footrest whilst in the extended position can cause damage to mechanism. Always return to upright position before closing the footrest.

Important information: Please note that when you receive delivery of your reclining chair, the mechanism in its new state may feel stiff and somewhat hard to operate, this is not a manufacturing fault it is inherent that any moving/mechanical action will loosen up with use. Expect your reclining furniture to loosen up with use to the extent of approximately 20% from when you first received it. Always return Recliners to the upright position before hopping out of recliner and keep hands/feet clear of the mechanism when opening or closing.

Important to note Young children should not play under or around the movingmechanism of your recliner. Jumping on the footrest whilst in the extended position will cause damage, and can be dangerous.

If your motion furniture comes with lights, it is very important that cords are not in contact with water and concealed away from children. We recommend supervision around furniture with lighting and electric mechanisms.

Handling or moving your furniture

When you are moving your furniture, correct technique is very important, always lift your furniture from the base, never lift by pulling on armrests or backrests as this can cause damage. Dragging your lounge can also cause scraping or tearing, and possibly damage to floors. Placing furniture directly onto a wall can also cause scraping or tearing to back of lounge, always leave a gap between the wall and lounge to avoid.

Care of Timber and Hard Surfaces

Most of our timber tables, buffets and entertainment units come with a lacquered surface, we do not recommend placing a hot coffee cup or hot dinner and serving plates directly onto timber surfaces. The general rule is: if something is too hot to hold, it is too hot to place on timber. Coasters and table runners are recommended.

The lacquer applied to our timber products is water resistant, however cannot tolerate excessive quantities of liquid. Dry any spills immediately and polish the surface, otherwise liquid may seep through the lacquer and cause irrepairable damage. Timber can develop a cloudy appearance caused by condensation when hot items are placed on its surface. This cloudy appearance cannot be removed unless the whole table is resurfaced.

Other spills, such as glue or correction fluid, should be removed with a damp cloth (soapy if necessary) then dried and re-polished until the gloss returns.

Do not allow hot cooking utensils, methylated spirits, pens, textas, nail varnish and other similar substances to come into contact with your timber furniture. Your solid wood furniture is a natural product and may expand and contract due to temperature conditions, occasionally producing small cracks within or between the timbers. This is normal and often part of a piece’s character. To minimise movement the furniture should not be placed outside, in direct sunlight or in heavily airconditioned areas.

Keeping your tables free from grit and dust by lightly cleaning regularly will maintain your furniture in optimum condition – polishing cleans and nourishes the wood, protects it and highlights its character.

Glass and Mirrors

Glass and mirrors surfaces require low maintenance. A weekly wipe with a slightly damp cloth is sufficient. Glue and pencil marks can be removed by applying some Eucalyptus oil with a soft cloth.

Powder coated, Resin and Acrylic Finishes

Resin and acrylic are both synthetic materials so they can scratch and mark easily, try to avoid placing sharp objects on their surfaces. You should also always ensure that you do not have the furniture or homewares too close to a heat source. Certain solvents can damage resin and acrylic, it is best to keep your furniture away from harsh chemicals. To clean your furniture, use a mild detergent in lukewarm water with a clean soft cloth to wipe the surface down. Always rinse detergent off the surface with a new clean cloth. Once the surface has been appropriately cleaned, dry the surface by blotting with a clean soft cloth.

Rattan and Cane Furniture

To clean rattan furniture brush regularly with a dry medium-bristle brush, such as a vegetable brush, to remove dirt build-up from between the reed strands. If very dirty, or to spot clean stains, use a mild detergent or a furniture cleaner. Take care however, as although rattan, wicker and cane can withstand moisture to a certain extent, they will become limp, loose and saggy with too much water. Hosing with water at high pressure is not recommended. Wicker will resume its size and shape when it dries, but if too much water has been used in cleaning, the strands of reed may be disturbed and remain distorted after drying.

Cane is sometimes recommended for outdoor use, however if left outdoors it will deteriorate after a few years depending on exposure to the elements. If you would like an outdoor cane-look setting, we recommend that you purchase a synthetic woven product.
